Police say they have dismantled four organised crime gangs over the past year
As of March 31, 2023, the PSNI had been investigating 55 organised crime gangs in Northern Ireland who are believed to be involved in a variety of illegal activities such as money laundering, fraud, terrorism, human trafficking and drug dealing.
Police have said that the number of crime gangs that it is investigating fluctuates depending on "perceived threat, harm and risk", and that it is understood that 38% of OCGs have links to paramilitaries.
It highlights the arrest of a man in August 2023 for a number of offences, including; human trafficking, rape and paying for Sexual Services. This man was a remand prisoner who had been previously charged with other offences that relate to the same investigation, with the victims being vulnerable young local women.
Two men and a woman have been arrested as part of the investigation, following searches in the Belfast and Newtownabbey areas, and have been charged with a number of offences including; human trafficking for sexual exploitation, controlling prostitution for gain, brothel keeping and money laundering.
