Albert Pierrepoint killed more than 600 people but went on to oppose the Death Penalty
In the late 1950s, visitors to The Rose and Crown in Much Hoole were greeted by the smiling face of a welcoming landlord. Albert Pierrepoint offered a warm welcome and a friendly face to anyone calling into the pub for a pint or a bite to eat.
In September 1932, aged 27, Albert began working as assistant executioner alongside his Uncle Thomas. After seeing his brother's demise from alcoholism, Thomas warned Albert: "If you can't do it without whiskey, don't do it at all." He also ended the life of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain for shooting her lover dead in 1955. Last year, Pierrepoint's hangman's notebook went under the hammer for £10,000.
Evans - who was entirely innocent - was executed by Pierrepoint before the real killer was sentenced to death three years later. The case was later used to support the abolition of the Death Penalty in 1965.
