Organizers claim it is a carbon neutral tournament, overlooking the $220 billion investment in infrastructure
Despite this, organizers have declared the World Cup a carbon neutral tournament, as Qatar has promised to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and offset any residual carbon footprint by purchasing carbon credits. In doing this, they are conveniently overlooking the huge $220 billion investment made by the country over the past decade. In its preparation to host the World Cup, Qatar has built multiple stadiums, roads, a subway system and an entire city, all financed by the sale of oil.
Should we even be measuring the carbon footprint of financing the FIFA World Cup? Yes, we definitely should, if the largest, or indeed the sole source of funding is the extraction, transportation, refining and sale of fossil fuels. For the past few years, Qatar has been trying to shift its focus from oil to liquified natural gas, the cleanest fossil fuel, which produces 30% less CO2 than oil.
World Cup organizers claim they will invest in various CO2 reduction projects such as planting trees and financing renewable energy plants. This will be done through the purchase of the so-called carbon credits — one credit is equivalent to one ton of carbon dioxide — which effectively gives them the right to pollute the environment.
