The extremely affable Schitt's Creek star leads a new Apple TV+ travelogue that doesn't quite live up to its title
ByWhy is Eugene Levy, the beloved, eyebrow-waggling major domo of Canadian comedy, travelling around the world and staying at a selection of heart-stoppingly beautiful hotels? Why not, baby!
The pitch? “Eugene Levy visits some of the world’s most beautiful and intriguing destinations in Costa Rica, Finland, Italy, Japan, Maldives, Portugal, South Africa, and the United States, exploring hotels and places.” The ‘catch’, such as there isn’t, is that Levy occasionally has to leave the luxury hotels in which he is staying, and reluctantly explore something or other nearby. It’s a premise as wafer thin as the gold leaf that comes with the dessert Levy bravely eats in Venice.
Which is to say, he’s given some fairly pleasant tasks to explore, and he does so pretty gamely. Episode 1 sees him touch down in Finland, ostensibly to spend some time outside of his hotel learning to embody the Finnish national trait of ‘sisu’, which roughly translates as “stoic determination and hardiness”.
It’s a formula that’s repeated across the series. Can Levy survive… observing a sloth and then feasting on steak in Costa Rica? Dining with a private chef in a modernist Utah compound? Being in the earthly paradise that is the Maldives, despite not being a fan of water? The answer, without giving too much away, is… ‘yep’.
