At just 25, Shams Charania is already one of the most accomplished NBA journalists. Here, he goes in-depth about his journey to where he is today at The Athletic and Stadium, and his continuing evolution from delivering scoops to being a prolific on-camera interviewer and television analyst.
... [+]Most people would be more than satisfied with being one of the highest-profile NBA journalists and established news breakers in the country at the absurdly young age of 25. Shams Charania is not one of those people.
Shams attended New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill., located about 20 miles northwest of the United Center. It was there in 10th grade English class that Charania received a suggestion that would change his life.Charania was always the guy who would do better in English class or on writing assignments than in math. He and his friends always obsessed about the latest sports news during the pre-Twitter age, constantly looking to get information before anyone else.
Where Charania differentiated himself as a high schooler was his relentless ability to network and try to build sources, cold-calling as many agents and team executives from around the NBA and Europe as he could find information on. His mom worked hard as a nurse at Skokie Hospital in the Chicago suburbs, and during 11th grade she encouraged Shams to apply for a job as a unit concierge, a fancy term for secretary, on the floor where she worked. It was hard for him to fully devote himself to the job because he was already dead-set on what he wanted to do with his life.
During college, Charania had to balance the expectations of doing well in school while his burgeoning side hustle took up more and more of his time. There wasn’t much time for a social life back then, as Shams was focused on the mindset of building out his digital Rolodex and constantly writing for RealGM and ChicagoNow.
And it was Twitter that would slowly help build Shams’ brand when the RealGM scoops started coming. He’ll always remember March 1, 2013, when he broke forward“The rush that I had breaking that story, you would’ve thought that I broke the Kyrie trade,” Charania said. “I think it showed me the value of relationships.”ASSOCIATED PRESSwith Chicago, which was also a huge deal, and another addictive adrenaline rush, for the college freshman.
“It’s like ‘what am I doing?’” Shams thought to himself. “I should be at home studying like every other kid.” “It was my validation,” Shams said, dreaming that one day he’d be the next Adrian Wojnarowski or Adam Schefter. “That’s what really pushed me every day. I had to keep pushing.”Breaking 10-day contracts is one thing. Breaking a shocking trade and one of the biggest news stories of the 2013-2014 NBA season, at 19, was another.Shams gained about 4,000 Twitter followers that night, a big deal for him back then.
“It was clear to me that he had what it takes to be terrific in this business,” Fichtenbaum said, undaunted by how young he was. “He knew what he wanted to do and he pursued it relentlessly.” “I was just honored and excited to even be a part of it,” Shams said. “What am I even doing here?
