Jacques has no hands. Pierre lost his head. Now the roadside attractions are getting reborn, with the help of volunteers. “It’s a little piece of Americana.”
Joel Baker, founder of American Giants, which restores larger-than-life fiberglass attractions, says that most are gone but about 180 remain standing, and that interest in them is growing. There’s a nostalgic factor, he says, but also fascination from younger road-trippers in search of quirky finds and photo ops, cataloged in resources like RoadsideAmerica.com.
Mr. Cahill called Dave Young, who owns the Danbury property by the gas station, and asked permission to give Jacques hands and use it to welcome visitors to the popular family summer destination on the Marblehead Peninsula. The Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council agreed to act as fiscal agent for the project, which will be done in three phases, including a stone marker, lighting and landscaping, at an estimated cost of $68,000 to $88,000. Jessica Denton, council press secretary, posted an item on the councilpage about the restoration, looking for volunteers and donations. “We got like 25,000 engagements,” she says, including people who viewed and reacted to the post. “It was insane.
An 81-year-old woman stopped by, asking what she could do. Mr. Cahill attached a cardboard sign reading “Ask me your questions” to a pole and gave it to her along with an information sheet so she could tell people what was going on. Some brought lawn chairs to watch the restoration.
