The loch is worth a visit even if you're not a Potter fan
film. Major fans will already know this, but across the eight movies in the series, many scenes were filmed on-location in Scotland.. Located approximately 12 miles west of Fort William, the freshwater loch is around 17.5 miles long—making it one of the longest lochs in Scotland.
Loch Shiel is one of the few locations to be featured as a filming location in all eight movies—albeit briefly—as it was used as the Hogwarts Lake. Perhaps its most prominent feature in the series is in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, during the scenes in which Harry and the other Triwizard Tournament participants had to dive into the lake to rescue their loved ones.
The two other films in which the loch features majorly are Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. In the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry can be seen riding over the lake on Buckbeak the hippogriff, while in the Half-Blood Prince, Harry and Hermione look out across the lake from the Hogwarts Astronomy Tower at the end of the movie.
If you're a Potterhead, then seeing the location where such iconic scenes were shot will give you a thrill like no other. Even if you're not a fan of the series, Loch Shiel is stunning in its own right, and is home to rare birds such as black-throated diver and golden eagles—making it perfect for a spring day out.
