Jasmine James's upcycled vintage label turns retro sports merch from brands such as Nike and more into one-of-a-kind pieces.
— who is from Oklahoma, but now based in Brooklyn — grew up wearing the sportswear brand almost exclusively. “I love everything they make. I used to collect vintage Nike jackets, just so I can look at them every day,” she says. It’s only natural that her love of sporty clothing has forayed into her own designs today.
James founded her label last year, but her love of making clothes goes back to her college days. While studying at Oklahoma State University, James was a big thrift shopper, and spent a lot of her free time scouring second hand stores for retro attire, which she would then flip on resale sites such as Depop or Etsy. She then turned to YouTube for help on how to DIY the pieces she would find, which often came from Adidas, Champion, and, yes, Nike.

James says the craze for her pieces comes down to comfort. “It’s in between being comfortable and also being something that you might not see on anyone else,” she says of her line. James also says the fact that her clothes are eco-minded, in that she repurposes clothes that would otherwise be discarded or forgotten, is another selling point. She says, “You can still be fashionable while trying to save the world.
