Starting in August 2021, TikTok users found themselves scrolling through their "For You" page, desperate to keep up with the viral sensation known as "Bama Rush." The videos of college-age girls participating in the University of Alabama’s sorority rush week exploded. This year proved that RushTok is here to stay. And with so much attention, it's no surprise that HBO Max and Vice Studios saw the potential for a documentary.
Fleit added that "This film is a thoughtful and compassionate portrayal of young women in 2022 as they rush the sorority system at the University of Alabama." Following the release of videos on TikTok that claimed girls were caught with hidden microphones during the rush process, a representative for Vice Studios told The New York Times that “hidden microphones” are not involved in the production. However, it seems like the University of Alabama did not know that this production was occurring.
Dorrill added, “The university has not authorized any third-party entity to film, record or document any recruitment activities and does not allow media inside occupied buildings such as residence halls and sorority houses.”the project has been in the works since the TikTok trend went mega-viral last year.
