Maybe you’ve seen the Dirt Road Gourmet label in the frozen food section at your local grocery store.
“A friend of mine said, ‘I saw that other casserole in the refrigerator. We’re having company for the weekend, and I want to buy your leftovers,’” Jackie recalls. “They were all recipes for casseroles that I had made over the years and people had liked them,” she says. “So. that’s just what I started with.”Nail’s Convenience Store in Eclectic was the first place to carry them, and as word got around Lake Martin, other stores soon added them.
So, she told the Piggly Wiggly rep no thanks, but suggested that he call her husband to get his opinion.“Reuben came home that night, and he was like, ‘You just make ‘em. I’m gonna sell ‘em,’” Jackie recalls, laughing. “He went through a lot of treatment and surgeries and clinical trials,” Jackie says of her husband. “Then it just reached the point that just said, ‘You know, there’s nothing else we can do, and we think he should enjoy the rest of his life.’ So that’s what we did.
