Data shows HMP Durham is the most crowded prison in the country
Hundreds of convicts are being released from prisons early as the government grapples with a serious overcrowding problem. Now the Manchester Evening News can reveal - by analysing official data - just how crowded prisons in Greater Manchester were, although they're far from the worst.
With fewer than 80,000 cells available, many of those prisoners are required to share cells and accommodation. The figures show that HMP Durham is the most crowded prison in the country. In July it had a prison population of 984, and 573 usable cells to accommodate them. Strangeways has an operational capacity of 704 prisoners and a population as of July of 657. The level of crowding is therefore 95 per cent, meaning it's not officially classed as overcrowded. Styal in Cheshire - for women aged 18 and over in Wilmslow - has a figure of 96 per cent. It means both prisons are pretty close to capacity.
Under the early release scheme, around 5,500 prisoners are expected to be freed early in September and October alone, including 1,700 on the first day.
