The Winter King adapted Bernard Cornwell's The Warlord Chronicles book trilogy, and the series made some huge changes to the King Arthur tale.

Again, the whole story is being told from Derfel's perspective, which is what made Cornwell's take on the myth so refreshing when it was published. The show's executive producers Julie Gardner and Lachlan MacKinnon spoke to CinemaBlend about the changes they made, and why they introduced Arthur much earlier:
In the novel, Mordred is actually Uther's grandchild. Norwenna is the wife of Uther's son Mordred in the book, with their baby being born shortly after Mordred died in battle. That makes him Arthur's nephew instead of his half-brother, as the series depicts it. After the kingdom of Ynys Trebes falls after a prolonged siege by the Franks, Lancelot and Galahad later head for Dumnonia. The showrunners may be saving the introduction of Galahad and Lancelot until the second season, but since the chapters where they appear were largely cut, it would have been tricky to include them organically in the first series.
