This state of affairs is broadly similar to the situation last time a person was infected by bird flu in the UK, in 2021. This also occurred after contact with infected poultry.But that doesn’t mean there’s no cause for concern and the much greater severity of the bird flu virus – compared to Covid, for example – means an avian pandemic could be extremely dangerous, experts warned.
And there are only thought to be a few, if any, cases of human transmission involving previous bird flu strains. Scientists say its likely that seals have passed avian flu between themselves, while mink are thought to have transmitted the virus to each other at an outbreak in a Spanish farm – these cases would be particularly concerning because it suggests mammals can spread it among themselves.
“So probably these two cases in poultry workers do not pose a high risk of triggering a further outbreak. But if the very remote probability actually happens then it could be very serious,” he added.
