WASHINGTON — Ukraine's president appeared to rebuke President Joe Biden Thursday after Biden suggested that a "minor incursion" by Russia into Ukraine would not merit a strong international response.
"We want to remind the great powers that there are no minor incursions and small nations," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote in a tweet posted Thursday morning. "Just as there are no minor casualties and little grief from the loss of loved ones. I say this as the President of a great power."
Zelenskyy's comment was a remarkable retort from a close U.S. ally that has received millions of dollars in military assistance. During a news conference Wednesday, Biden vowed to impose "severe economic consequences" should Russian President Vladimir Putin decide to invade the eastern European country."It depends on what does. It's one thing if it's a minor incursion and we end up having to fight about we have to do and not do," Biden said in his remarks.
The White House sought to clarify Biden's remarks after his nearly two-hour news conference. "If any Russian military forces move across the Ukrainian border, that's a renewed invasion, and it will be met with a swift, severe, and united response from the United States and our Allies," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement released Wednesday evening.
