The Brilla Paterson school, part of a network that includes charters in the Bronx, New York City, and New Jersey, consist of three grade levels – which include kindergarten, first grade, and fifth grade. Grade levels are determined when schools are granted charter by the state Department of Education. The DOE then stipulates which grades they can offer when they open and how many seats.
Harry Lee, CEO of New Jersey Public Charter Schools Association, says it very important that Brilla Paterson opened in a city that has struggled to provide a quality education in its traditional public schools.
