These are not sea creatures. They're glass sculptures created by 19th century father-and-son glassworkers Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka. The duo didn't teach anyone their techniques and when the son died, so did that knowledge: 📸 Guido Mocafico
. While researching jellyfish online, he kept stumbling across images of the Blaschkas' glass models and mistaking them for the real thing. When he embarked on his Blashka photography series, he was determined to make the models seem as lifelike as possible, hoping to fool viewers the same way he had been fooled.
Because the sculptures are so fragile, Mocafico had to get special permission from museums to shoot their collections under the supervision of conservators. After experimenting with different ways of lighting the diaphanous models, the photographer settled on using a diffuse array of backlights that made the sculptures glow as if lit from within. "I didn't want the viewer to feel the intervention of the photographer," Mocafico explains.
Shot against a black background suggesting the deep sea, each of the luminous pieces appears to float in space. Some of the models were originally suspended by a copper wire, which Mocafico removed in Photoshop. As intended, the photographs have led many viewers to believe they're looking at real aquatic creatures.
"People have been coming up to me and asking why I'm shooting jellyfish again," Mocafico says with a laugh. "For me, that's a big win."
