Wilt Chamberlain is one of the most fascinating athletes of the 20th Century. Now we have a documentary worthy of the man. richarddeitsch on “Goliath,” debuting on Showtime this week.

The year is 1972, and the narrator’s voice is unmistakable to people of a certain age. From the air, we see a custom-designed home over famed Bel Air. Let’s let ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” host Jim McKay take it from there.

Showtime Sports this week debuts “Goliath,” a sensational three-part documentary series examining the life, career and impact of Chamberlain. The doc will debut on demand and on streaming on Friday for all Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers before making its on-air debut on Showtime this Sunday at 10 p.m. ET. Episodes will premiere each Sunday following the debut.

The film is told mostly chronologically, starting with Chamberlain’s childhood in Philadelphia and his rise to high school basketball prodigy. His time at Kansas serves as the inciting wound — he never got over losing in triple overtime to North Carolina in the 1957 NCAA championship game — and the filmmakers expertly document how Chamberlain was unfairly tagged for that loss, beginning a narrative trend.

Espinoza said Showtime Sports had numerous meetings with the filmmakers on whether the film should use A.I.-generated audio, and he cited the controversy around” Espinoza said he sided with doing it because Chamberlain provided enough first-person material where everything voiced in the doc is either a direct quote or a summary of what Chamberlain had previously said and thought. Showtime disclosed the use of A.I. in all its press materials.
