This bill would discourage child abuse reports. Gov. Greg Abbott should veto it | Opinion

File photo by G.J. McCarthy/Staff photographerTragic results can occur when the signs of child abuse are missed, or someone who could have intervened doesn’t.

State laws involving the welfare of children are written to allow people to anonymously report suspected child abuse and neglect, and various statutes and codes of conduct require social workers, doctors, institutions, teachers, first responders and other professionals to report suspected child abuse.

The reason is to err on the side of caution and take complaints seriously, regardless of how those allegations come to the attention of investigators.would turn back the clock to a time when complaints of child abuse weren’t taken seriously enough, quickly enough. The Texas House and Senate have approved this misguided measure. Now it is up to Gov. Greg Abbott to stop this nonsense with a veto.

Authored by state Rep. Valoree Swanson, R-Spring, the bill would prohibit the Department of Family and Protective Services from taking and pursuing child abuse reports made anonymously, meaning that a caller who wants to report suspected child abuse would have to identify himself or herself. The agency also would be required to notify the caller that making a false report is a criminal offense.
