As I have grown older and got involved in activism, I have come to realise that not all Muslims have access to community during Ramadan and Eid ✒️ Hareem Ghani via ipaperviews
. We are a UK-based collective that helps Muslims in prison by offering financial aid, books and companionship. One year later, we have corresponded with over 350 people in prison, offering financial aid to over 90 people .
A recurrent theme in all our conversations with Muslims in prison is the extreme sense of loneliness that they are experiencing. A sister from HMP Low Newton, for example, told us she has no family since her elderly parents died a few years ago. A father from HMP Liverpool said he hoped to purchase phone credit with our financial grant so he could finally call his autistic daughter.
Our work in the past year has reminded us about the importance of maintaining connections with people in prison. When we make contact with Muslims in prison, they respond with comments such as: “It’s always nice to know that I’m not on my own”, “Having Nejma Collective’s support me has grown my love for the Ummah and is a testament to Islam bringing strangers together” and “I cannot express how much love has come into my heart.
