'In the spirit of Columbus, I slapped a plaque on it and claimed it for my people.' –rjjago Happy IndigenousPeoplesDay!
I used to live in Italy for three years after university. Around that time, there was a big riot and controversy in Genoa, where. I went down to Genoa to really get a feel of the place. That place is just sick with Columbus stuff. You come off the train, and it’s a giant statue of Columbus, and there’s Columbus this, Columbus that.], but flags are really expensive. I found out that I had to go back to Italy last year, and I was just thinking it’d be fun to burn some bridges.
It was actually really hard to do because it looks like it’s secluded, but there is a massive parking lot behind it full of cops. I had to sit there for like 3 hours until I had a gap of time when no one was looking in order to put it up.Directly across from there, it’s where teens or young people meet up for dates, so there’s a constant turnover of people there. Super, super busy. So I waited.
After about an hour, there was a little gap of 15 seconds. And then [there was] the next gap, and unfortunately, there were some tourists who wouldn’t leave then. The third gap, I was able to get in there and put up with no one around. I put it up, and I went behind the house for a minute, and then I came out and joined the crowd and walked away.RJ:
Oh, yeah. I would never put that up in front of a crowd that’s gathered at Columbus’s statue. Not so much because I’d be worried about the Italians because there’s tons of anti-Columbus graffiti up there, too, at his statue. It’s the American tourists going there — I wouldn’t want to be clobbered by one of them.
