Jack Coulter on synesthesia 🎨
JC: Well the most obvious for me is having the ability to live a life immersed in ever-changing colour. No single day or experience is the same for me, as my vision is dramatically different each second. The fact that something I was doing in my own very personal world is now stimulating the public, it really inspires me.
Just recently to actually sum things up, The London Orchestra personally contacted me to produce paintings in response to their annual live show. I feel very grateful of having this gift of painting a composition or song onto canvas, and it’s a dream to be working with such a respected establishment.The massive personal downside is sensory overload. It gives me severe migraines. I’ve had one every single day since childhood, so it’s a burden in that sense.
When I’m playing instruments such as the violin, piano or any for that a matter — my heightened ear for music really is a prominent stimulus for me feeling disorientated. I see colourful clefs in my head from hearing everyday sounds, like a car speeding or child laughing, The exact name and pitch appears within one second, I don’t understand how it happens, it’s just innate for some reason. It’s absolutely [wild] and sounds totally off the wall, I don’t know why my brain works the way it does.
Also the fact that I have a constant misconstrued treatment of reality. I live in an extremely heightened colourised world, and even though my synesthesia prescribes me with this intense multicolour vision, I almost envy those who don’t view their life through a colourised lens, as I have a very hard time treating and seeing things for what they actually are, as everything is seeped in colour. It often leaves me in periods of disorientation and confusion.
