The four-and-a-half page memo – written in 2016 by San Jose State’s outgoing interim president after a parade of anxious witnesses visited her office in her final week – is a critical missing…

A newly disclosed, long-secret memo reveals how Mary Papazian received a dire warning in 2016 when she arrived at San Jose State University to begin her tenure as president: “there was inappropriate handling, touching of female athletes by the director of sports medicine, who is still here!”

“Mary could have put a stop to it years earlier,” he said. “The memo is that rare, documented evidence that, you have to imagine, often doesn’t exist.” In October, she suffered a fall that caused catastrophic brain damage. In a FaceTime call with this news organization, her husband of 36 years, Larry Martin, sat next to her as she tried to speak. But her thoughts and words were jumbled.

Papazian, through her office, has defended her actions, ultimately saying that after receiving Martin’s email, she ordered a “climate review” of the athletic department that ended up criticizing then-athletic director Gene Bleymaier – not Tuite. Papazian demoted him and, after a nationwide search and letters of support from more than a dozen coaches, promoted Tuite.

The women mentioned some kind of past investigation, but Martin wasn’t told the details that the probe was done in-house in 2010, explaining away Shaw’s reaching under bras and underwear during sports massages as a “bona fide means of treating muscle injury.” She ended her email with a pledge: “I assured these individuals I would share this information with President Mary Papazian, and that although I did not know what process would be taken to review these I knew there would be follow-up.”

Months later, in February 2021, she sent another email to the CSU’s general counsel’s office. “I was going through old files today and lo and behold I found a folder which has detailed notes from my meetings.” “President Papazian,” it said, “did not recall that reference to Shaw until she reviewed Martin’s 2016 email.” The Bay Area News Group requested the memo shortly thereafter.from her $403,000 a year post at the end of the fall semester in December. On the final Friday of January, after months of obfuscation and delay, lawyers from the Cal State system released Martin’s memo to the Bay Area News Group.

“It would be arrogant to say that any leader has all the answers. I feel that I did what was right with the information I had at the time,” she said. “I, along with the four presidents who preceded me, understood that the allegations against Scott Shaw had been investigated and the case was closed.” “What I know is that you have to rely on your team to do their jobs, and I had no reason to doubt their professionalism,” Papazian said. “Marie Tuite was not mentioned specifically in the climate review, and I don’t recall anything else coming across my desk that was negative about her.”
