Evelia Davis is opening The Diaspora Collective in Heritage Square where she hopes to build community and change conversations about African heritage.

Evelia Davis has spent most of Black History Month finalizing preparations for the opening of The Diaspora Collective, her new business at Heritage Square that she hopes will become a hub of Black history year-round.

The restaurant, headed by chef Digby Stridiron, will serve a range of dishes representing the entire diaspora, including flavors of Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean and the Southern United States. The menu will include a number of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. "There'll be people who have never experienced this type of food before," Davis said."They will hopefully walk away with an appreciation and a better understanding of a culture that maybe they hadn't been exposed to before."A guide to Black-owned restaurants, bakeries and businesses in metro PhoenixDavis' passion for sharing and celebrating Black history began when she was in college.

Davis realized that taking college classes or traveling to another continent is not an option for everyone. So she's opening The Diaspora Collective to allow Black residents and visitors to Phoenix to learn more about their roots, as well as to encourage others to fall in love with African culture.
