The incident occurred on United flight 824 from Los Angeles to Boston on Oct. 11. It was described on Twitter by Jessica Sidman, food editor at, who said her brother was the passenger who complained about the T-shirt. Her initial tweet about the incident at @jsidman has been retweeted about 4,000 times and attracted about 3,000 comments.
Sidman said the supervisor told her brother that United “couldn’t do anything just because it was offensive.” She said, “My brother said it wasn’t offensive, it was threatening,” and, “they offered to put my brother on another flight. They didn’t say anything to the guy with the shirt.”Some of the comments on Sidman’s Twitter accounts took the view that the T-shirt slogan was an exercise of free speech.
