Jay'Aina Patton and her dad, Antoine, created photo_patch to help kids keep in touch with their incarcerated parents.
and an additional 50 cents per photo, Photo Patch does this all for free, allowing children and parents to stay in touch without an additional financial burden. Instead, Photo Patch raises money for printing and postage through individual donations, grants, and fundraising events.
One of Patton’s proudest memories was the day Jay Jay told him that Photo Patch needed a mobile app. “Everybody’s on their phone. It’s way easier for them to take a picture and type a letter right there,” she explained. “My dad said I should try it.” Jay Jay’s app has since been downloaded more than 10,000 times. On any given month, Patton says, Photo Patch has between 1,000 to 2,000 users. Now, with prison visits canceled indefinitely, numbers are steadily rising from a daily average of 50 letters to 75 to 100.
