The path of Hurricane Ian blew across nearly 15% of the U.S. bee population as the devastation has reached beyond Florida.
Beekeeper Robert Bell, 63, of Fort Meade said he was lucky but other keepers still have flooded hives and lost everything.
“I’ve been in it for 42 years, and I have never seen anything like it,” said Bell, who saw much less damage statewide from Hurricane Charley in 2004. “We’re going to be ok, but it has really hurt our numbers.” The bee colonies hardest hit were in the Punta Gorda, Naples and Fort Myers areas because they could not evacuate the hives in time, Verbeek said. “They were caught off guard.”University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences
The value of each bee colony is about $350, Vu said. With 380,000 colonies destroyed, that amounts to $133 million in losses to the beekeeping industry, Vu said. In addition to syrup distribution in Winter Haven, there were relief efforts for the bees in Arcadia and Fort Myers for beekeepers to distribute the sugar-nectar mix where it was most needed.
