'We're back on the map'...thousands of fans give Leigh Leopards hero's welcome after Wembley win
Thousands of fans lined the streets of Leigh to give their team a hero's welcome after winning the Challenge Cup for the first time in more than half a century. Leigh Leopards secured a dramatic last gasp victory against Hull KR at Wembley Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the first time they had lifted the trophy since 1971.
The bus made its way through Astley, Tyldesley and Atherton before reaching Market Street and stopping at Leigh Town Hall, where they were received on stage as the party atmosphere reached fever pitch.Flares, flags and a cacophony of horns and singing meant the players knew exactly how much their achievement meant to the fans.
Among those taking in the celebrations were Phil Murphy and seven-year-old Kara, who both travelled from Leigh down to London for the game. "It has been an absolutely brilliant season, you can't fault them really. Derek has put his money where his mouth is.Also back in Leigh after a trip to the capital was the Wilkinson family. Lynn Wilkinson said there was a memorable atmosphere among the travelling support.
