Massive storms hit the eastern US, causing flight cancellations and power outages. Tornado watches and warnings were issued across 10 states, affecting millions of people. By Monday afternoon, 1,500 flights were canceled and over 7,000 were delayed.

The National Weather Service said more than 29.5 million people were under a tornado watch Monday afternoon and that the area of greatest concern centered in the Washington-Baltimore region.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it was rerouting planes around storms heading to the East Coast and warned it would likely start pausing flights in and out of the New York City area, Philadelphia, Washington, Charlotte and Atlanta. The Office of Personnel Management announced Monday that all non-emergency employees would have to depart before 3 p.m., when all federal offices closed.
