Sir Keir Starmer made his case to be the next Prime Minister during the conference in Liverpool
Boasting a significant polling lead, the party believes it can be the next government. Stickers saying "Win '24" were handed out at the end of Keir Starmer's speech on Tuesday, signifying its faith that 2023 will be its final full year in opposition.
Sir Keir's keynote speech drew on his upbringing to good effect. As well as referring to the "pebbledash semi" in which he was raised, the Labour leader spoke passionately about understanding the effects of a cost of living crisis.“I’ve felt the anxiety of a cost of living crisis before and until your family can see the way out, I will fight for you. That’s my mission and we will do it.
He added: “You don’t belong here. You can’t do that. Working class people certainly hear that voice, trust me. In some ways , it’s the hardest class ceiling, of all. “A Britain strong enough, stable enough, secure enough for you to invest your hope, your possibility, your future. A Britain built to last.”
Labour will fight the election on the economy and growth. It has not often been in a position to be able to do that.Labour has been in opposition since 2010, when David Cameron's coalition government brought an end to Gordon Brown's premiership. It has been thirteen long years for the party, which has taken many forms since the end of New Labour.
