Citations are only issued to drivers traveling 76 miles per hour or greater, or at least 16 miles per hour above the speed limit.
MAYFIELD, Ohio -- Some motorists’ desire to not just test the speed limits, but far exceed them when driving on I-271 in Mayfield Village -- where police have been utilizing traffic camera speed enforcement during morning and afternoon rush hours -- has resulted in more than $300,000 worth of fines being collected from Jan. 1 through April 30.
Mayfield deposits the money into its Capital Improvements Fund, per a Village Council resolution. Revenues generated from the photo enforcement program are to be used for, according to the resolution, “law enforcement expenses that enhance response to traffic incidents and improve enforcement of traffic safety laws, as well as for other Village capital needs.”
“Officers have been conducting photo enforcement details during morning and evening rush hours for a total of approximately 34 hours per month. These numbers show the program is operating as intended by limiting photo enforcement to morning and evening rush hours and targeting motorists traveling well above the posted speed limit.”
Matias has stated that the photo enforcement program is meant only as a supplement, and not a replacement, for the MVPD’s traditional traffic enforcement program. From December, 2021 through April, 2022, MVPD officers issued 180 traditional citations on I-271 for speeds of 80 miles per hour or higher, including 17 citations for vehicles traveling more than 100 miles per hour.
