“I think it was the hardest game I ever played in my life,' Cabrera said after playing his final game.
’s career, there was no shortage of pageantry. He received a cowboy hat in Houston, a biker vest in Milwaukee, a rocking chair in Washington, D.C. They gave him artwork in New York and Pittsburgh, a warehouse brick in Baltimore, a scoreboard panel in Boston and a surfboard in Anaheim. The Oakland A’s even gave him a cheap bottle of wine.In Cabrera’s final weekend at Comerica Park, there was a drone show and a stadium card stunt. They gave away not one but two posters, plus a button-down shirt.
“I haven’t ever had chills for that long,” said Torkelson, who had Cabrera sign his glove and plans to retire it in a glass case. This weekend, then, was an exhale as much as it was a celebration. It is over. The big man made it to the finish line, albeit on one knee. Even the staunchest curmudgeon, though, could have been swayed by the emotion of Cabrera’s final game. Cabrera’s parents threw out ceremonial first pitches Saturday. His children did the same Sunday, then introduced their father over the PA system before his first at-bat. Just before the game, when fans held up cards that spelled out “Miggy” and honored his accomplishments, Cabrera turned and looked at the sold-out ballpark. That was the first moment when it all hit him.
Miguel Cabrera limped to the finish line over the course of seven years. But Sunday in Detroit, he received a hero’s farewell that somehow felt perfect. One of the most striking things about the twilight years of Cabrera’s career was his gradual slant toward a more graceful state. He came to understand where he was in his career. He appreciated the history of the game and his place in it. He had too much pride to enjoy losing and struggling to perform like his former self. But he cared about the milestones and he found it in himself to care about the memories.Cabrera presented with a signed Comerica Park seat.
