NEW: Using or downloading TikTok on city devices or personal devices using the city network will no longer be allowed in Aurora.
The resolution states that these companies have known affiliations to the Chinese government and employ Chinese Communist Party members.
Zvonek acknowledged that the ban on TikTok won’t solve all cybersecurity threats and noted that the resolution also directs city staff to provide forward with recommendations for other third-party platforms or vendors that could also lead to security vulnerabilities and adopt new policies and standards.
The majority of the City Council rejected amendments to the resolution by Councilwoman Alison Coombs, who called for the removal of references to TikTok specifically and China. She instead wanted the resolution to apply to any third-party app or website that could provide a security risk so as “not to make our security policy based on politics.”
The ban would not apply to the police department, which has asked for an exemption for investigative purposes, and any other employees who need to use it for business purposes would have to get approval and go through a security process.
