A premature baby seal found abandoned on an Aberdeenshire beach is now bulking up thanks to a fish soup diet. The tiny grey seal pup was discovered on the sand at St Combs on Thursday, September 28, after the alarm was raised.
It was soon discovered that it weighed just 6.75 kg meaning it was likely born premature as pups usually weigh between nine to 14 kg at birth. A statement from the BDMLR said: “The first few days in care are critical, but so far the pup is doing well and has already increased by 1.25kg on a diet of fish soup.
“A couple of adult seals were observed in the water nearby but neither appeared to be interested in the shoreline and the pup continued to be quiet and unresponsive. “At around 9am the following day, with the weather worsening and knowing the pup hadn’t fed for at least 19 hours, the decision was made to lift the pup from the beach and get it to the nearest vet.
