Tubolito of Austria is working on a “nanogenerator” built into one of its trademark orange bicycle inner tubes that powers a wireless tire pressure sensor.using a NFC chip—this battery-free system required use of a smartphone app while stationary and does not measure air pressure on the fly. The new system, currently still in development, sends air pressure data via Bluetooth low energy BLE to a compatible bicycle computer or smartphone.
Tubolito has received funding for its research from the EU’s Horizon 2020 Symphony project. The system could be commercially available by the end of 2024. TPU is much lighter and stronger than butyl, and lighter and stronger than latex but with better air retention. Before being repurposed for inner tubes by Tubolito, the material was being used, in small quantities, as an acoustic membrane inside cellphone loudspeakers.
A typical butyl inner tube for a road bike weighs 100-110 grams. Tubolito’s lightest road bike inner tube weighs just over 30 grams. It’s also substantially more compact when folded, a space saver.
