Splinter is believed to be the kind father and leader of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but he has a villainous past that he's unable to escape.
Splinter is widely believed to be the good and wise leader of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, whose teachings have led the Turtles to greatness, but while he may have raised heroes, Splinter is all too aware that he'll never escape his villainous past. In the more kid-friendly adaptations of Splinter, he is kind, patient, and even silly - but that was not the case in the original version, introduced in Mirage Studios’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Originally, Splinter was a vengeance-consumed rat who gained human-level sentience through accidental mutation, and when he found the four mutant turtles, he didn’t raise them with love as his adopted sons, he raised them to be killers. When Splinter was just a rat, his human master was murdered right in front of him, and the man who was to blame was Oroku Saki, aka the Shredder.
Splinter Knows He's No Hero Splinter challenges the leader of the Triceratons to one-on-one combat, which the Triceraton accepts given her superior size and strength. Despite that, Splinter is confident that he can defeat her, but not with his superior fighting ability. When the Triceraton corners Splinter, the mutant rat blows a paralyzing agent into the Triceraton leader’s face, momentarily freezing her limbs.
While the TMNT manage to defeat their master and spirit away the Triceraton leader, Splinter admits that he was a Foot assassin in his previous life - prior to being reincarnated - and that in many ways he always will be. While he wants honor and heroism for his sons, he doesn't truly believe those virtues can safeguard Earth effectively on such a large scale.
