Forty-four years later, Reynolds spoke to SFGATE from the Merced River Canyon on his first day of retirement."I really took Yosemite for granted," he said of his life in Yosemite Valley before taking his first U.S. Postal Service job. He was promoted as a career employee in 1983, later became postmaster in El Portal in 2004 and eventually was appointed Yosemite’s postmaster in 2012."Half Dome was always there. There was Yosemite Falls. I didn’t give it a second glance.
Those days sometimes forced Reynolds to drive the mail truck more than 100 miles out of the way to get around road closures."I remember throwing the mail over rockslides. The mail truck was on one side, and we were on the other. We had to get the mail in during these times. People look for normalcy, especially in a park where natural disasters happen. They look to the post office for that.
