Even as the delta variant surges, some school districts aren’t beefing up protocols to prevent infections, leaving decisions to parents.
Ben Sterling, president of Education Round Rock, the local teachers union, said staffers and students alike aren’t given incentives to follow Covid rules, particularly related to quarantining. One round of quarantine would use all 10 days of personal and sick leave staff members get annually. Those days roll over, but Sterling knows of teachers with health issues who haven’t banked any. “The ones who are most vulnerable are going to get hit hardest, as per usual,” he said.
Quarantining isn’t required for Round Rock employees because they would have to use personal and sick leave, LaCoste-Caputo said. The board of trustees approved Covid leave only for staff members who test positive. The Texas Legislature didn’t fund virtual learning, so school districts are covering the costs themselves. Weir said Round Rock is paying $17.5 million to offer virtual learning for students younger than 12, who can’t get vaccinated. For older students, teachers upload handouts of curated lessons.

Even as COVID cases rise, US Open, other events welcome fansFull-throated shouts and hearty applause returned to the U.S. Open tennis tournament Monday, bursts of sound that offered some form of reaction to nearly each and every action. A year after spectators were banned entirely from Flushing Meadows because of the coronavirus pandemic, lending a dystopian feel to a normally lively event, 100% capacity is once again being permitted — proof of vaccination needed; no masks required — at this and other sports events. “Playing without fans here last year was brutal,” 2017 U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens told the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium after beating Madison Keys in three sets in a rematch of their all-American final four years ago.
