Todd Field weighs in on Tár fan theories and the story behind his titular character's EGOT.
You bring up film school and I was curious about the scene set at Juilliard, in which Lydia rips into one of the students and his choice of music. I’m wondering where the inspiration for that came from, and if you pulled from your own experiences at film school?
It’s funny—you’re the first person that’s ever drawn that line. I suppose that’s true. We had a class at the American Film Institute called Narrative Analysis. It was a fairly brutal class. It was run bywho was a Hungarian filmmaker, and we’d make these things called cycle projects, and you had to shoot them for four days.
One of my favorite things about this film is the theories that are being doled out on the internet about it. I wasthe other day about the ending, and how it all might be in Lydia’s head. How do you take in that kind of engagement, of people are coming up with their own theories about your storytelling? Do you enjoy that?
Absolutely. The film is a dead thing unless people are doing that. My intent is completely irrelevant. The dream is that there's going to be enough room for anyone to come in and be the final filmmaker. I’d love to hear when people attack the film for their own reasons. That interests me too. There’s no wrong way to read the film. The film is meant to inspire as ferocious or as superfluous speculation as possible, or opinions as possible because that is the only intent behind it.
