The Nashville outsider and one-time Texan, who plays Tomball's Main Street Crossing Dec. 5-7, on a live album that captures the musician at his best.
By all means, just try to define Todd Snider by music industry parameters new and old. It’s a task set for failure. He’s a little bit folkie, a lot intelligent lyricist, a committed troubadour and a guy who loves a little chaos, which makes him a ramshackle singer-songwriter who fits into no easy category, which undoubtedly is how he prefers things.
Years have passed since that “East Nashville.” Since then, Snider -- who plays Main Street Crossing in Tomball Dec. 5-7 -- has both expanded and codified his brand, perfecting a mix of music and comic storytelling. This trial-by-audience approach explains the release of “Return of the Storyteller,” a new double-live album that updates things for those who last checked in with his life “The Storyteller” in 2011.
A: Man, you know, I can’t complain. I’ve been home a couple of months , which is good. But I’m still reeling from a lot of loss.A: Yeah, a little bit of both. Touring, that tour, it felt like it gave me a chance to live like I was a troubadour again. Exploring the philosophy of it. Being free. I could’ve done a bunch of stuff. And I could’ve talked about a bunch of liberal stuff. But I have had years of that. This time I didn’t feel like people wanted to argue.
Q: The fact that this is a live album feels important. I think it’s your third. Stage appears to be where you’re happiest… A: That brings me a lot of joy. I’ve watched my heroes do that. Take these stories and spread them around. And I think Skip would’ve have loved to be part of that. I think that’s the part of the job I like. I never took much interest in the other rewards. Just a song.
