Biles left due to a “medical issue” after competing on the vault.

The U.S. women’s gymnastic team earned a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics Tuesday, with the Russian Olympic Committee taking home the gold, after gymnastics superstar Simone BilesSimone Biles and Jordan Chiles during the artistic gymnastics women's team final during theRussia earned a total team score of 169.529 points and the U.S. earned 166.096, with Great Britain taking home the bronze medal with 164.096 points.

Biles withdrew from the team final after competing in the vault, where she earned 13.766 points—below teammates Jordan Chiles and Grace McCallum—after performing a less difficult vault than expected. Chiles, McCallum and gymnast Sunisa Lee competed for the U.S. in each remaining rotation after Biles pulled out.

The U.S. and Russia stayed neck and neck throughout the competition, with Russia slightly ahead, though the U.S. slipped behind during the final rotation as Chiles fell during her floor routine, earning a score of 11.7. Russia’s win comes after the Russian men’s gymnastics team won the men’s team final on Monday, and breaks the U.S.’s streak after the women’s team won gold in 2012 and 2016.This is the first time in 11 years the U.S. women’s gymnastics team has not earned the top spot in a major international competition, NBC“Simone Biles has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue,” USA Gymnastics said in their official statement on Biles pulling out of the team final.
