Tom Hanks suicide comedy A Man Called Otto isn't dark or clever - it's confused Review: ⭐
A “funny” film about a man whose noisy neighbours get in the way of his suicide attempts? It’s in just as poor taste as it soundsFrancesca SteeleOtto is a man who is very bad at dying. Obsessed with recycling rules, parking permits and the memory of his late wife, he keeps on trying to end his life.
But darn it, every time he’s nearly there some quirky incident comes along to interrupt him. A vehicle parked so poorly he simply must remove his head from the noose to go outside and complain about it; a pregnant woman demanding to be driven to hospital just as the car exhaust is really getting going.
If this sounds tonally off key, that’s because it is. Very. It’s meant to be comic – see how the gun was in his mouth but then that pesky teenager called and then he accidentally shot the ceiling instead?Ha ha! – but thwarted suicide simply isn’t that funny. Extremely dark comedy can sometimes get away with this sort of thing, butA Man Called Ove
, itself based on the book by Fredrick Backman. It is even more saccharine, relying heavily on the supposed hilarity of seeing Tom Hanks play against type as Otto. You just know from the outset that that frown’s going to get turned upside down. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with knowing exactly where a film is going, but the journey has to be worth it. In this case the journey is just not very amusing, although Hanks is, of course, always watchable, as is Mariana Trevino as his erratic Mexican neighbour Marisol, who keeps making Otto delicious snacks right before he’s about to kill himself.
