Holland's character is loosely based on Billy Milligan, who was arrested for rape, aggravated robbery and kidnapping in 1979.about the role, Holland admitted that he found it difficult to detach himself from the character after nine months of shooting.
"I was seeing myself in him, but in my personal life," he said."I remember having a bit of a meltdown at home and thinking, like, 'I’m going to shave my head. I need to shave my head because I need to get rid of this character.'
