The Standard has teamed up with Belgian football expert Scott Coyne of the Belgian Football Podcast to provide the lowdown on all things Cercle and Bruges.Q. What are your expectations from Cercle across the tie?They had an exceptionally strong season last year in the Belgian Pro League, finishing in the Champions’ Play-off for the very first time and also qualifying for European football for the first time since 2010.
A. Cercle essentially play a form of ‘Gegenpressing’. It’s an intense high press system, where the team looks to win the ball back immediately after losing possession. Denkey has two years still to run on his contract and the Belgian transfer window is still open for another month, so plenty of time for movement, but at the moment Denkey has returned for pre-season training and is very much part of the squad.A. Alan Minda, a 21-year-old Ecuadorean winger who can play on either the left or right and also can play as a second striker is one to watch.He has plenty of strength, pace and power, so is a threat to most sides.
There are plenty of good quality cafes and bars. It’s also worth checking out one of the many waffle bars which are outstanding.
