New Zealand authorities say a volcano has erupted on a small island often frequented by tourists. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said people were injured and missing after the eruption on White Island while about 100 people were on or near the island.
WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A volcano erupted Monday on a small New Zealand island frequented by tourists, and a number of people were missing and injured after the eruption.
“Some of those, at this stage, are unaccounted for,” she said. ’“A number of people are reportedly injured and are being transported to shore.”“All our thoughts are with those affected,” she said. White Island sits about 50 kilometers offshore from mainland New Zealand. There will be questions asked as to why tourists were still able to visit the island after scientists recently noted an uptick in volcanic activity.
GeoNet says it is New Zealand’s most active cone volcano and about 70 percent of the volcano is under the sea.
