Work is under way on plans to create a 'dental access centre' at Garden Hill Primary Care Centre
The town suffered a double blow when two practices shut within the space of 18 months.The development was included in NHS Dumfries and Galloway chief executive Jeff Ace’s mid-term review of tactical priorities for 2023/24 – during which he described NHS dentistry in the region as being in a “very perilous state” .
NHS dentistry in Dumfries and Galloway has been hit by a string of blows in recent years due to practices either closing or de-registering NHS patients. “At the start of the year we were probably at the worst case scenario projecting and we’re seeing that worse case scenario feed through. Health board chairman Nick Morris added: “I can’t help thinking we may be the canary in the coal mine when it comes to this one. I think we were the one that alerted it most significantly to the national group first.
