Toyota opened the doors of its factories in Japan last week to show off its latest manufacturing technologies.
says Toyota has been using die casting techniques for many years and has developed molds that can be quickly replaced — something that needs to happen regularly with high pressure casting. The company says it can change a mold in 20 minutes, a process that normally takes up to 24 hours to accomplish. The ability to replace a mold so quickly translates into a 20% boost in productivity, the company says.The last stop on the press junket was the Motomachi plant, Toyota’s oldest and biggest factory.
Toyota says this new production technique is in keeping with its TPS philosophy, which stresses functionality and seeks to minimize waste, while always striving for incremental refinement of any process in order to perfect the final product. The company says it will reduce upfront plant investments and improve the flexibility of assembly lines when they need to be adjusted or adapted to build new models.
