David Jones died during the early days of the 1984-1985 miners' strike
Nottinghamshire Live has been examining the impact of the coal industry's demise on our county 40 years on from the 1984-1985 miners' strike. We have already seen how this historic industry's legacy is being preserved and heard from those who lived through that time. We now revisit a tragic event during the strike that thrust one Nottinghamshire colliery into the spotlight just days into the strike.
Along with scores of other striking miners, Mr Jones had travelled to the colliery in the North Nottinghamshire town of Ollerton. The 24-year-old died on March 15, 1984, a night that another one of those picketing Nottinghamshire collieries in the early days of the strike cannot forget. "The poor guy is gasping for breath and I heard someone say 'he's got asthma, he's having an asthma attack'. They got him off the road and put him on the grass verge, they tried to calm him down but he's really struggling to breathe.
Mr Nixon, now 67 and living in Barnsley, says those still at Ollerton eventually heard the noise of hundreds more striking miners marching into the town after news about Mr Jones' death had spread. "I thought at that point it was the police because we were getting upset, no doubt about it", Mr Nixon says.
