The general secretary for the union Aslef said the Government has 'forced' members into this position
which coincide with the Conservative party annual conference next month.
The union said the strikes will force train operators to cancel all services, causing travel chaos for passengers, including those travelling to and from the Conservative conference in Manchester, which is being held from October 1 to 4.Overtime is also going to be banned by members from September 29 to October 6, a move which is expected to “seriously disrupt” the network, the union said.
It is the latest set of strike dates in a long-running dispute between the Government the union over pay and conditions of train drivers. Mr Whelan also accused Transport Secretary Mark Harper of not being in touch with the union to discuss issues over pay and conditions, likening it to the children’s bookHe said: “Do you remember? Well, what we want to know is Where’s Harper? We last saw the Secretary of State for Transport in December. We last saw Huw Merriman, the Rail Minister, in January. And we last saw the train companies in April. Since then, nothing. Nada. Zilch.
