Royal Ship takes San Diego ’Cap; American Theorem wins Crosby

Trained by George Papaprodromou, American Theorem was an 7-1 long shot. Richard Mandella’s Royal Ship left the gate as a 9-1 long shot.Joe Bravo rode American Theorem to a 1½-length win over Get Her Number after running fifth halfway through the $400,000, 6-furlong sprint for older horses. With Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith aboard, Royal Ship finished 2¼ lengths ahead of Country Grammar.
Gary Mandella has been standing in for his father while the senior Mandella has been away from the track for the last week while recovering from COVID-19. Stilleto Boy finished third in the San Diego followed by Mandaloun, who won the 2021 Kentucky Derby when Medina Spirit was disqualified. Mandaloun was more than seven lengths behind the winner. Reigning Pacific Classic champion Tripoli was sixth.
Baffert also had concerns for Shaaz when the 4-year-old son of Uncle Mo drew the No. 2 gate for the Bing Crosby — which actually became the inside post when Desmond Doss was scratched. Shaaz was eighth out of the gate.
