I don’t have to worry about whether people see me as a woman or not. In roller derby, I feel safe. I feel seen.

Teams have a DIY aesthetic and a grassroots philosophy, where a willingness to get stuck in is the most important factor. I worry about whether I’ll get misgendered, or have someone refer to me as ‘Sir’.

Slowly, however, I learned how to skate and improved my confidence. After 12 months, I managed to pass my Minimum Skills, a test all skaters take in order to prove that they can play derby safety without being a danger to other skaters – or themselves!
